Tottenham in the England Squad

Five Tottenham players have been called up by Roy Hodgson
Five Tottenham players have been called up by Roy Hodgson

With two international fixtures coming up for England in the next week, Roy Hodgson picked five Tottenham players, something that hasn’t been done before. Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Ryan Mason, Andros Townsend and Harry Kane have all been called upon, four of these players, coming through the club’s youth academy. I will look at each player and if they deserve to be called up to represent their country.

Kyle Walker

Before injuring himself towards the end of last season, Kyle Walker was a consistent figure in Roy Hodgson’s squad. Recently though, the Tottenham man hasn’t been in good form and it comes as a bit of a surprise that he’s been called upon. Whilst having electric pace, Kyle Walker has not been good defensively and was completely exposed against Ashley Young and Marouane Fellani in Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester United. I see Nathaniel Clyne starting ahead of him in both international fixtures against Lithuania and Italy.

Danny Rose

This call up is well deserved for the young left back who has had a brilliant season at Tottenham. There was talk of Jamaica wanting to persuade Rose to join their national side if he wasn’t picked for England but we have to thank Roy Hodgson that he was. With his pace and power, Danny Rose can defend and attack and also packs a mean shot, we saw this against Arsenal in the 2009/2010 season. With many years left in him, Rose could potentially be a starter for the next Euros and World Cup providing England get their. Even though Danny Rose has been called upon, whilst writing this article, he has pulled out of the squad with hip and hamstring complaints. This may see Ryan Bertrand called up due to his good form at Southampton.

Ryan Mason

Some may be shocked by his call up to the England squad, but Ryan Mason has played his heart out for Tottenham ever since he’s got into the team. It looked like another season on the sidelines at Tottenham or even on loan for Mason, but when he was introduced against Nottingham Forest in the Capital One Cup, he grabbed his opportunity by the horns. 25 yards out, he hit the top corner and there was no turning back. Ever since, Mason and Nabil Bentaleb, another academy product at Tottenham, have took over in central midfield, and with his energy, Mason could be key for England in the upcoming years.

Andros Townsend

Andros Townsend has made the England squad again, but how many more times can he? Townsend has scored one goal from open play for Tottenham this season and hasn’t shined at all at Spurs since coming back from his loan spell at QPR back in 2013. Before, he was labelled a ‘hog’ of the ball and only had eyes for goal after a great strike for England on his debut. But now, he rarely shoots, and when he does, it goes wide. Townsend will have to show his ability if he gets the chance in this international week, because the likes of Ashley Young and Wilfred Zaha will be right behind him.

Harry Kane

Harry Kane has been one of the best players in the Premier League this season and has rightly so been called up to the international squad. The 21 year old has scored 29 goals in all competitions this season and has been compared to former England and Newcastle hit man Alan Shearer. After finding it hard to break into the Tottenham squad and being sent on loan to the likes of Norwich City and Leyton Orient, he has finally broke into the team and has made big money players Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor warm the Tottenham bench. Likely to make his debut against Lithuania, I can see Kane getting on the score sheet and may just become a player Hodgson builds the national side around.
